An Appeal to the Young
An Appeal to the Young was first published in 1880 in Kropotkin’s paper, La Revolte, and was soon thereafter issued as a pamphlet. It has been published in all major languages of the world and even today it’s appeal is as soul-stirring and effective as it was in his times.
This is addressed to the young generation at the threshold of entering into the professions. Every young man and woman has this question: “What am I going to be?”. Kropotkin argues with his young friends that after having spent time learning trades and sciences at the cost of society it is our turn to put our knowledge and experience to the service of the people and not make use of our “acquirements as instruments of plunder” for our own gain. He asks the young people to look beyond the narrow boundaries of their professions and ponder what for they have acquired their skills. With logic and passion Kropotkin appeals to the younger generation ready to launch its career that it can either “develop an insatiable longing for pleasure at any price” or apply their intelligence, abilities and knowledge to “help on the enfranchisement of those who today grovel in misery and in ignorance”.
Prince Peter Kropotkin (1842-1921) was a well-known Anarchist revolutionary of Russia. He was an eminent geographer and geologist but left everything to join the revolutionary movement in 1870. He was arrested but he escaped abroad and settled in England in 1886.
Reservation: Support, Opposition and Our Position
This essay brings in light the fooling mechanism inherent in the idea of reservation, of course fooling both “supporters” and “opponents.”
When the ruling class hurls the bait of reservation in employment or higher education, the students and unemployed youth belonging to middle class and upper castes, who are already dependent on jobs for their livelihood think that the “dalits” and backward castes are now even robbing them off their remaining opportunities of employment with the aid of the crutches of reservation. On the other hand, youth belonging to “dalit” and backward castes fail to realize that if the percentage of reservation is raised a little more and if it is implemented in an honest and effective manner, even then not even fifty percent of unemployed youth from “dalit” and the backward castes will obtain employment. Whatever meagre opportunities for employment will be available to them, even their benefits will primarily be reaped by an exceedingly small population of “dalits” who have joined middle class and people belonging to economically, socially and politically influential backward castes; and the vast majority of population living their lives as proletariat-semi proletariat will obtain almost nothing from it.
This booklet sees the question of reservation within a broad revolutionary perspective of thinking about the caste-problem and will be useful to all interested in the subject.
Where Should Students and Youth Make a New Beginning?
The student-youth magazine, ‘Ahwan Campus Times’ is being published for past fifteen years. Along with issues of education, employment, culture and various related social questions it has also given keen and thought-provoking material on the question of student– youth movement.
Three editorial articles of this magazine published in recent past (between January 2003 and January 2005) have addressed some very crucial questions facing the student– youth movement and have raised some very important issues. It is necessary that all young people who desire change should give them a thought. Keeping this in consideration, these essays have been published in the form of a booklet so that it can be read by a wide youth population.
Discussing the obstacles, problems and challenges in the path of preparing for future revolutions these essays call upon the new generation of revolutionaries to understand the science of revolution and with help of their scientific understanding they will have to find a path of new revolution keeping their country and times in mind.
