How Capitalism was Restored in the USSR
The ideological significance of this book is indisputable from the perspective of building a thorough and well-defined Marxist-Leninist understanding on the problems of socialism and capitalist restoration. It holds immense significance even today for ideological preparation of all those who are committed to the reconstruction of the socialist project. To understand the great achievements as well as the causes of defeat of the proletarian revolutions of the twentieth century and also understand the nature and problems of socialism is extremely essential for the proletarian fighters who are committed to turn the new round of world historical battle between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie into a decisive and conclusive battle in the twenty-first century. It is also important for the intellectuals who have chosen to be on the side of the proletariat and who want to deeply know and understand the science of proletarian revolution.
The class struggles continuing both in India and Nepal deeply influence each other, therefore, it is absolutely necessary for all the enlightened and freedom-loving people in India to be well acquainted with the journey of the Nepalese Revolution. The debate pertaining to parliamentary path versus revolutionary path which has arisen anew on the question of the path of revolution in Nepal, has universal ideological significance. It is as important for the revolutionary communists and the proletariat of India to understand the ideological content of this debate as it is for the Party ranks and toiling masses of Nepal. New developments taking place in Nepal have made this book even more relevant today.
Preface of Class Struggles in the USSR
Charles Bettelheim wrote this essay as the preface of his book Class Struggles in the USSR. It was written in 1974 and the English translation of the first volume of book was published in 1976 by the Monthly Review Press.
We are publishing this essay separately as we believe it will help in understanding the real causes of the capitalist restoration in the USSR and will arouse the reader’s interest for a deeper study about problems of socialist construction and capitalist restoration.

Problems of Socialism, Capitalist Restoration and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution
The present essay was published in the Hindi journal ‘Dayitvabodh’ in its November-December 1993 issue under the Mao Tse-tung Birth Centenary Series but it was written in 1990. It was first presented as the base paper at the five-day All-India seminar at Gorakhpur organised by the Long-live Marxism Forum (6-10 June, 1990). The topic of the seminar was “Problems of Socialism, Capitalist Restoration and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.”
The essay presents a class-analysis of the events in the erstwhile Soviet Union and East European countries at that time (1990) and underlines the epochal contributions of Mao Tse-tung while thoroughly analysing the causes of capitalist restoration and the problems of socialism. The author wrote a supplement to clarify his position and include some new points after the discussions during the five-day seminar, and it has also been included in this booklet.
